Merthyr Tydfil (Cilsanws) Golf Club Player Reports
Ian Macdonald (England) 03/07/07
Turned up at the golf club late one Saturday afternoon whilst the better half was at an outdoor Donny Osmond concert in Merthyr Tydfil - honestly! I was welcomed by Phil Laing the steward who took my green fee but signed me in as a members guest. He took pity because it was the monsoon season outside. I plodged my way around a very rural golf course. When the rain relented and the clouds lifted the views were spectacular. The golf course is very rudimentary but I had an enjoyable time. Beware of the stewardess if she challenges you to a game of pool in the clubhouse. She is dynamite.

Played the course several times over the summer. Excellent value for money at £10 for 18 holes. Course is pretty rural, your line is usually calculated by aiming at the nearest sheep to the pin. Course is pretty difficult, need to hit very straight or balls are generally lost to the ferns. Stunning views across Merthyr and the Brecon Beacons, I live in Merthyr and didnt think it could look so pretty! Scored my 1st ever birdie on hole 12 Marshalls Rock. Drove the green, 300 yards but down hill all the way, eagle putt lipped out and tapped in for a 3! I nearly scored my 1st eagle before my 1st birdie!

I have only been playing for 1 year, my handicap has now been dropped to 24. One reason for this is the continued support from all members.Whenever you turn up for a game there is always someone who will give you advice, take you around the course, and generally give you the best of welcome. Since joining I have played with all the low handicapped players and the Hallets. My advice to anybody: Join NOW.P.S. The views are the best in Wales.
