A nostalgic return to the land of my fathers and to the club where I was a member until 2005. The sign at the bottom of the Leasebrook Lane states MGC is 'arguably the prettiest course in Wales' and that certainly is not in dispute. However, it could quite justifiably claim to be the trickiest course in the Principality.
It is not a long course by any stretch of the imagination, but the ups and downs certainly make it feel a lot longer by the end of the round.
There is hardly a level stance to be found on the course and the members have always claimed that is an advantage to have one leg shorter than the other to play here.
The course is a mixture of shorter relatively straightforward holes intermingled with some real horrors.
As always, the course was in tip-top condition, but the climbs a little steeper than I remembered.
After a couple of years playing windy links courses in the north of Scotland, I was quite relishing having a go at a relatively short parkland course that I knew well......what a fool.....the course definately had the last word here!

Played at Monmouth with a society at the end of a lovely tour of the area. In gorgeous weather, we found the course to be in excellent condition all round but with quite slow greens that needed some getting used to. Scenery splendid, welcome first class from staff, members, everyone. The course is what many term "undulating!!!"..... I would call it more truthfully, "extremely undulating!!". The good news is that there are some downhill holes, but there are some real stinkers uphill as well, with names such as "The Struggle" and "Long Haul". If you are visiting the area, do put this on your agenda, you will not be disatisfied, but make sure you have a buggy, and also a planner as there are many blind shots and wicked dog-legs

I had heard a lot of good things about Monmouth Golf Club and, having recently played the course, I am pleased that they all rang true.
The views of the surround hillsides and valley are stunning - possibly the most picturesque I've seen in the South West. The course isn't overly long but the challenge is created by the hills and surrounding trees.
The club members were very chatty and friendly which all added to an enjoyable round of golf.
This all said, I still think the Rolls of Monmouth outshines all the other courses in this area.

If you have a 'Things to do before I die' list make sure you add this course to it.
A real test of golf in the fairest possible way with the full compliment of long and short holes.
You will struggle to find a better day out.

Played this course today, the final day of our three day tour (The Rolls of Monmouth, Woodlake Park and this course). We had three great days on three very good courses, however this is the only feedback I left, so it may be obvious which I enjoyed the most. This is an excellent course to play (for all standards). The condition of the course was very good, the condition of the greens were good, there was a good variety of holes, but the one thing that stood out the most was you will not visit a FREINDLIER club. Go play this one, you won't regret it. Societies likewise. We will be back thats for sure.

Took a detour to play the course on the way down to watch The Seagulls clinch victory in the Div 2 playoff final. An enjoyable and undulating course provided a good challenge, complete with some superb views. Greens were in fine condition and were often difficult to hit from sloping lies on the fairways. Selective use of water hazards provided an additional challenge, there were some excellent 'drop' holes and take your hiking boots for the uphill 7th hole 'The Struggle' which plays much longer than it's 305 yards suggest !! Great value for money at £24 and would recommend it to anyone visiting the area.
