Nefyn and District Golf Club Player Reports

The previous contributors have sent mixed messages about this course, most thinking it amazing, yet some being disappointed. I am most definitely of the view that this is a spectacular golf course that must surely be amongst the best in the UK. Wonderful views from all holes, stunning tee positions and course layout, but not exceptionally long, and playable by golfers of all handicaps.

The first 10 holes are all a delight to view and play, and then you come on to infamous, and much photographed, old 8 along the point. For me the 13th is the pick of the holes, offering a classic risk-reward tee shot in deciding how much of the bay to cut off to get closer to the green. The 18th is a bit of an anti-climax and the 12th is disconcerting due to the volume of tourist traffic on the well in play footpath, particularly off the back tee which offers a totally blind shot.

The best testament I can give is that the group in front of us, on walking off the 18th green, went straight into the pro shop to book to play again.

We played on a sunny weekend, so this report is most definitely biased towards the positive.

The course is stunning. Full stop. Gorgeous location, great rolling fairways, interesting challenges. The course is well controlled, so play (generally) proceeds at a decent pace.

Other reviews have described many of the holes so won't go into details; safe to say that none of the holes (particularly old course 11-17) will seem unmemorable or space-filling in any way. The 18th is the only real slight letdown - a short par 4 with no real hazard to the driving was a downturn after what had preceded. However, it may be a welcome respite to those who've fed all their balls into the Irish sea....

The greens were in good nick, but left long (so disturbingly slow compared to home course); this was just a calibration issue. Generally very true roll.

A great piece of land, well designed for golf, great grub in the clubhouse, a real test of all aspects of your game. Not too long, but doesn't play short. Anything but a typical rip it/wedge/putt/rip it/wedge/putt of some courses; but I was hoping for more mystical insider-knowledge than the "keep it on the fairway" tip I was actually offered by the starter.

As some people have commented, there are a lot of walkers through the course; you need to watch, but this really is too good to restrict.

For a course of this quality, green fees are reasonable. We played 2 rounds in a day for 60 quid, which is a great deal.

I managed to play this course on 29.01.2008 and I was really looking forward to playing the old course - weather permitting.

The weather turned out to be kind - just a stiff SW breeze and no rain! - so off I went.

The course is really two courses in one with holes 1-10 shared and then separate holes 11-18 (new and old).

Holes 1 to 5 were quite a tough start (3 decent par 4s, a par 5 and a par 3) and a very good introduction for what was to follow as they follow the rocky coast out, you need to leave your sliced tee-shot in the car for these holes, else you will lose a lot of balls!!

Holes 6 to 10 are typical of any good, well-maintained links/cliff top course with the wind being a major factor regarding difficulty.

Now we come to the highlight - holes 11-18 of the old course which send you off out on their own peninsular into the Itrish sea!

Hole 11 is a short par 4 with a long iron tee-shot and a completely blind approach shot to a reasonably flat green - a great hole.

Hole 12 is a much longer par 4 a really qirky with a blind tee shot to a narrow fairway which kicks your ball to the left, and a huge pothole-cum-cave at driving distance (thankfully I took rescue club and ended 20 yards short, otherwise it would have been bye-bye ball!!

The second shot is quite straight-forwrad towards a raised green.

Hole 13 is a long par 4 and has to be the tee-shot to die for, you have a good 200 yard carry to the fairway across a rocky bay/inlet, a real knee-trembler, a definitely deserving of the stroke index 1!! You know that you've palyed a real golf hole when you leave the green which is situated right at the end of the peninsular!!

Hole 14 is another real gem, I couldn't find the yellow tee at first until I looked upwards! It is on top of a tower and the green is at least 100 feet below and on the edge of the cliff, quite amazing!

Hole 15 is, like the 13th, a drive across a rocky bay, if the 13th was with the wind, then the 15th will be into it!!

After this exihilarating series of holes, the 16th is a standard par 3 of 170 yards back over the pothole encountered on the 12th, which gives you a temporary respite, before encountering the par 5 17th which is another blind tee-shot and og-legs to the left on an adverse camber (i.e. the fairway kicks your ball to the right!), the fairway being quite narrow, and is a very bruising par-5 when played into wind.

The 18th is a short par 4 back to the club-house and provides quite a gentle finish to what must be one of the strangeist and most exhilarating series of holes you will ever play.

The green staff and the pro were very friendly and talkative - apparently the old course is a nightmare in summer because of walkers and holiday-makers as there is a public footpath around the peninsular, and I can see that it would get pretty hairy when the old course is full of golfers as there isn't much room betwen the fairways of the holes.

Overall this is a must-play course if you are in the area - an unforgettable experience par none.

The Old Course is without a doubt the most spectacular course I have played in my life. I decided against pushing for 18 holes and instead played the back 8 holes (old course) to see if it was as amazing as as I had heard. Scenery wise the course is a must, and the golf was enjoyable and challenging, but it must be noted that the 12th hole is slightly absurd. Unless you have played the course previously it is virtually impossible; you tee off onto a fairway which will literally run your ball onto the path which splits the course, my tee shot split the fairway, ran over the pathway and into the cave across the path.

However this was only a minor hitch and the 14th par 3 made up for the 12th - the tee box was located ON the hut at the end of the point that the course is sitiated on and your tee shot is aimed at a green way below = spectacular.

We played Neffyn as part of a 5 course tour, taking in Caernarfon, Porthmadog, Abersoch, and Harlech. This was the Tuesday course and for most of us the second time we had played there. There is no doubt that Neffyn is unique, with some classic holes and a setting to die for, but this time round we noticed some flaws in the package. The greens were not as good as last time, being bumpy and uncut, and the closeness of the tees to the green just completed gives it a claustrophobic atmosphere at times, especially with the number of players on the course when we were there. I also agree with the previous correspondent, the 12th hole is just plain daft and dangerous. Having said all of that it is still somewhere you must play, it is a great day out with friendly staff, good food and a great atmosphere.

Absolutey spectacular views, however quite dissappointed with the actual golf course. Given all of the reports below I was expecting Neffyn to jump into my favourite top 10, or maybe even top 5, however I think it may just scramble into my top 20....just!

There is absolutely no doubting there are some impressive golf holes (4, 13, 14 and 16 in particular), and excellent use of the peninsula, however very frustrated by the fact that for some reason come the 11th hole all guidance markers and 150 yard markers seem to completely disappear!! Not ideal when you have people walking right along the flight path of some of the shots (you think) you need to hit!! I thought that the 12th hole is ridiculous and one of the poorest golf holes I've ever played! Blind tee shot to a fairway that kicks everything down to a pedestrian path, and well stuck drives will just carry onto someones head if you're not careful....since you can't see the walkers!!!

Don't get me wrong, it's a good test of golf.....but as they say.....'don't believe the hype!'
