Newport Golf Club Player Reports

We played Newport on Friday 19th September 2008 on a beautiful summer day in glorious sunshine, no wind, and could not have had a nicer afternoon. This is the third time we have had a round there and we will certainly be back - it's an excellent course. The pro and pro-shop staff were very friendly, as were the members we have spoken to in the clubhouse. As to the course, it's fantastic. Well established, pretty, with varied and challenging holes. Fairly well wooded, this undulating course starts with a beautiful looking par-4 and then continues with good-looking and testing holes all the way round. The greens were also superb. I'd be a tad wary of Henry who reports below, as the par of 74 is from the ladies tees - Newport is 6273 yards off the yellows and is par 72. Our only gripe would be that they don't book tee-times, we had driven almost 200 miles from Essex and had to trust to the word of the pro that the course wouldn't be too busy to accommodate us. Fortunately, it was fine and we had no-one in front, no-one behind. One other point to note is that the course is located down a small lane behind a housing estate which has a very tight, very small bridge to negotiate on a bend, a large vehicle could have difficulties getting past the bridge. In summary, having played all the courses in the area, this was much more of a pleasure to play than it's pretentious over-blown neighbour, the people were far friendlier and being just beyond the Severn bridge, this is well-worth playing at the gateway to the country as a starter for Welsh hospitality. Highly recommended.

I played this course with or society in November and even though the weather was not the best, the course was in great condition. It's very well run and the pro is very helpful. Given the chance have a word with the green keeper, he gave me some very useful tips. Well worth the price and our society look forwards to playing here again.

A very nice course with friendly members and staff. Not particularly tricky tee to greeen but some of the greens are very tough - lightning fast and with many undulations. It is a par 74 so if you can hit a reasonably long ball, you will get some good opportunities to score.

The course is simply pro quality, members are very friendly but a few are to posh! but mostly ok, i have played the course about 10 times all through the season and the course is very well maintained all year round thanks to the head greenkeeper angus and his team. the best part of the course are the fast slick greens which take a ball so well and putt so true, i recomend this course to any one up for a challange!

I had the pleasure of playing at Newport Golf Club in September 2002, and I was astounded at the quality of the course at the end of the season. It was recommended to me by a friend and I am so pleased I took him up on it. There was a very friendly atmosphere and the catering was good too.
