Old Colwyn Golf Club Player Reports
Mighty Mariner (England) 07/05/08
Played course on the best day of April. Nobody around to greet us so we paid our green fees and teed off.
First hole was a good challenging Par 5, negotiated in a pretty handy (for me) 8. That's when the problems started. A small wooden signpost was all that was required to prevent us from spending the next ten minutes running around the 6th 7th and 8th holes looking for the 2nd Tee.
An helpful greenkeeper finally advised us to go through the gate, and across the road. Being hopeless townines we had assumed that this would result in us getting shot by poachers or trampled by a herd of angry heiffers. However we did find the second tee here in the next field.
Having established this to be an unusual set up we were less surprised to have to move into the next field along for the third hole. What did surprise us was the appearance on the course of numerous sheep and their associated droppings.
Having to tee off with three score and ten wooly pigs directly in front of me was somewhat disconcerting for a rank amateur. With little confidence that I would not kill one with a shank or humiliate myself in front of them with a duff, I drove out of bounds on two occasions. I left the 3rd hole relieved to have carded only an 11.
From this point the course picked up. It was better signposted, more realistically challenging, less livestock.
The short par three 7th was a joy, as was the near-vertical 9th. All of the greens unsullied by animal business were very well maintained as were the majority of fairways and bunkers.
In spite of the sheep thing I would return to Old Colwyn, but I would pack a pair of wellies and invite a border collie next time.

A nice friendly club which offers a very affordable round of golf. The course isnt the best in the world, but it offers some interesting holes with plenty of challenges. The 1st par 5 is very reachable and can get you off to a good start, the 2nd is the only really weak hole on the course, but once you get past this it really is good fun. The short par 4 8th is a lovely looking hole and tempts you to 'have a go' but this is one of those courses that can catch you out if you dont pay it proper respect.
I played after a few days of torrential rain and have to say that it was in good condition despite this. The greens were in very good condition. The £12 fees are well worth it, especially as its a very friendly club - no airs and graces here, turn up, pay your fees and enjoy your day - simple as that, what more do you need ?
