Clwb Golff Pwllheli Player Reports

Played Pwllheli in 2000 and wasn`t that impressed, the course was a little shabby and the greens were in a bad way. However, imagine my suprise when I returned with my posse to find the course having had a major facelift, everything about it was excellent, the course, greens and clubhouse. Also, can I just give a mention to the local lads that play on Sunday mornings, what a welcome, they are nutters, but what a laugh.

Day two of the North Wales 2005 tour for the London posse and Bristol monkey. After nearly being blown into the sea at North Wales GC the day before, the conditions were definitely a bit more favourable here. Ye Gods, even the sun came out! Well for a couple of hours at least.
Salt and sugar, ying and yang, Jekyll and Hide, Pwllheli Golf Club – this is a course of contrasts: a pure parkland front seven and then a predominantly linksy back eleven.
I know I've said it umpteen times on here but parkland golf just doesn't do it for me. However, it was a big relief to be out of the wind, at least for the start. And good scores on this parkland section can't be taken for granted. Each hole is bordered by mature trees which make it extremely difficult to get on in regulation if you end up between them – and trust me I speak from experience. And then there's that cheeky pond on the fifth (317 yards, par 4). You can't see it from the tee but it IS there – lurking just 50 yards in front of the green! Thankfully it's nice and shallow.
But it's at the eighth where this course really starts, with a cracking par 4 (350 yards) adjacent to the sea, raised tee, anarchically undulating links fairway, gorse on both sides, deep bunkers – and I haven't even mentioned the wind!
The next three holes follow the same direction, running along the coast. If you have a RH slice (Boof) or left hand hook (me for this week) then be prepared to bravely aim your shots out over some serious trouble.
The tenth is a cracking par 3 (197 yards) with the whitewashed cottage behind the green – and tough into the wind. It's followed by a great driveable par 4 (291 yards) but which is protected by seven bunkers, and the equally ever-present wind.
After that, links and parkland come in almost alternate holes. But both present some stiff par 4s: the 13th (422 yards), a very tight approach on the dogleg 14th (342 yards) with a pond and a bunker in front and more water behind, and the long 15th (455 yards). I also liked the blind 16th which is short (347 yards) but has a hogs back fairway that shrugs the ball off on both sides, sometimes irretrievably into the gorse.
The finishing two par 4s are a bit tame as the course returns to the parkland territory – although Young B wasn't complaining when he put a 6 iron on the 18th to 3 feet for a match-winning birdie (although this did include the '5' on the 4th, a score that was about as authentic as the Major’s Millionaire win).
There aren't any par 5s here but we didn’t find we missed them. Overall, Pwllheli was more than we expected. Proof was finishing our round at 6pm and then going out for another bash. But what the hell – it's Royal St David's tomorrow, so we needed all the practice we could get...

Fairways like carpet and greens in good condition with interesting dog-legs on both the parkland and links holes. Tight holes and others where you can open your shoulders. Ask for a twilight concession after 5 pm.

Played this course for the first time last summer (infact on cup final day) I was, to say a little dissapointed! After missing playing it for several years we decided to play it as it was said to be a superb course. Payed arround £27 for the day and after playing the course I would rate it well behind Nefyn/Abersoch/Criccieth for pure enjoyment. It is reasonably well kept and the staff were great but, I couldn't really justify £27. Worth playing once perhaps...

Very friendly club welcoming visitors & not expensive. Partial links & though very flat wind can alter club selection dramatically. Not long but with no Par 5's not easy to score well.
Always in excellent condition with fabulous greens.
Well worth a visit.
