The Rolls of Monmouth Golf Club Player Reports
Jonathan Farbowski (England) 17/06/08
Rolls of Monmouth is possibly my favorite golf in the country. It also comes second only to the Old Head of Kinsale in my all time list of great courses. Living in Gloucestershire, the course is not a long way from me, but I only play it once a year, as part of a full day or 36 holes when by best friend comes over from London for a game. I write this today, in anticipation of this year's said pilgrimage tomorrow. I have been playing the course for around 10 years now, and have never found it in anything other than great condition, with lush fairways and well prepared greens. The welcome in the club house and bar are equally warm with good food and nice atmosphere. I have also played the course with a large society and the staff cope exceptionally with any numbers thrown at them.
All in all, a great experience for anybody be it a local golfer like myself or somebody traveling to play in the area.

Having played the Rolls of Monmouth on two previous occasions and having been immensely impressed each time, I was extremely concerned about my third booking for 17th February 2008 because of rumours and internet postings about poor greens. I was tempted to cancel and book somewhere else for that day, but then thought that it is not fair - one should always be constructive with criticism and most certainly let the person or body your concerns. I therefore phoned the Rolls and spoke to Sandra Orton, the Club Secretary to express my concerns. I explained that this was a delicate situation, but Sandra was both helpful and honest. Following this, we continued with our booking and so glad we did. What a wonderful day. A cordial welcome; lovely bacon roll and coffee; an absolutely glorious couse; followed by lovely ham,egg and chips (the simplest dishes are always the best). ALL IN ALL A GREAT DAY.
I have one huge regret - the standard of my golf will never match the high standards of the Rolls.

I was a founder member of the Rolls and, back in the heady days of the 80's, it was next to heaven. Following five or six years as a member I moved from the area and did not return to play the course again until the summer of 2007. I understand that there are a number of the original founder members still playing there - unfortunately I did not encounter anyone on the day we played. amy brother and I thoroughly enjoyed our day there and cannot wait for the next visit. It was highly encouraging to see that there had been some overall improvements and the staff were extremely welcoming when they learned I had a history with the club.
The Rolls has not lost it's magic for me - I have had the good fortune to play golf in may parts of the world including here in Australia and accepting my bias it still ranks up there with the best.

Having read the report from August 07 I looked forward greatly to
revisiting the Rolls after a break of 10 years. I can only warn glofers that this certainly wasn't the case in November when I played it. The main problem is the greens. Most of them were recently tined and made putting a lottery. After three holes my head went down and I wondered how many more like these? In fact there were plenty, more than untined, and they resembled putting on small cobbles!
I was a guest of a society and they (22 in all) had booked a winter package deal, so by the time we bought a drink after the meal we were looking at £50 each for the day. So the cod and chips were another great disappointment. Frozen cod in breadcrumbs is not what you expect.
This is however, a magnificent course and laid out over breathtakingly beautiful countryside and in its prime has the potential to be a top 20 UK course. For me though, this was an expensive mistake. If the club had warned all visiters of course changes due to major maintenance then OK, we could have postponed
our day. Only my opinion - once bitten twice shy.

I played the course for the first time late August 2007 and was pleasantly surprised to find that this is a superb course. I have seen a couple of average reviews in some UK Golf Guides so I have put off a visit until now - don't let this deter you, the Rolls is well worth a visit. Having played it I can't possibly see why anyone would not enjoy a round here.
Set in beautiful parkland around the magnificent Rolls Manor House, every hole is well designed and each hole has its own character. Looking back on the round I can easily remember each hole which is a good testament to the individuality of the course. This is without doubt one of the best courses to play in this area. I am a low handicap player and found each hole an enjoyable challenge.
The greens were true and medium fast with several having false fronts that caught me out on a couple of occasions. A few of the back 9 greens are severe and require and accurate shot to the right part of the green to avoid three putts - number 10 is especially difficult to putt from the back of the green. You must purchase the yardage book if this is your first time playing the Rolls. Even with it I found a couple of holes deceptively difficult to visualize from the tee and after playing them spent time trying to figure the best way to approach the hole next time round. There are no fairway bunkers so its a great course for letting rip with a driver and at 6,733 yards from the back tees several holes need long drives. This is not to say that you can spray the ball anywhere as many holes have strategically placed trees that can hamper a badly played tee shot making the play all the more enjoyable. All in all a great course that you should try out if you are in the area. The staff were friendly and helpful and the food excellent. An earlier review mentioned the high prices although I found the prices well within what to expect at a course such as this.
