Tenby Golf Club Player Reports

I played Tenby 2 weeks ago for the first time and was seriously impressed by the course. It was the first time I had played a Links course too. I was warned several times by members to avoid the rough at all cost prior to out tee-time who it seemed were the friendliest members I have ever come across. The rough was indeed thick and long but somehow I managed to conjure a 77 (I play around 9-13) by only finding the deep rough once (there was no wind though)!

The greens were superb as well as the aprons and fairways. We played the wrong hole by mistake on the front nine and happened to then walk infront a four ball behind us who were only to happy to watch us take their place and tee-off (never get that around some of the courses in the South east where I live).

I hope to visit Tenby GC again this summer and would recommend this gem of a course to anyone.

Day four of our tour of Wales brought us to Tenby, the weather still held hot and sunny with no wind. Now this is a proper links course, with superb views all around. Very helpful Pro shop as were all the members we met on the course. No course planner was available, so we set off with some trepidation, but we needn’t have worried just follow the signs and you shouldn’t get lost. Look out for the black & white marker posts. You need to be on form to play this superb condition course, any shot landing off the fairway was into rough that consumed golf balls at an alarming rate. Once you reach the green your problems are not over, but with great aprons we soon learnt to putt from 20 feet off the green rather than chip and run. These greens were the fastest we played on all week and were truly superb, just don’t end up above the hole as anything down hill is scary quick, thankfully there are few bunkers.

If you like true links golf this is a course you must play, everything about this course is fantastic.

This golf course is very underated. I have played three times now and have only managed to beat my handicap of 7 once. If the wind blows it provides a real test. I last played from the white tees, whcih on the first is a stren test. At a good mid 400 yards, this feels like a par 5 if you don't get your tee shot off too well. The second allows you to open your shoulders on the drive, the bowl shaped green can provide fast putts in the summer period. The third is a tough tee shot that must be threaded between sand dunes, although not long, an iron off the tee is wise to give you the a mid-short iron approach into a very tough green (do not hit over the green or getting down in three from there is realistic probability. A few blind tee shots and bowl shaped greens with fast putting surfaces and unbeatable views to Caldy Island make this a worthwhile trip to make. The only reproach are the three new holes taht have been added (15,16 and 17) not only do they break up the flow of the round but are significantly different to the other linksland holes, as they climb up the hill to the back of the course. It is frustrating to see the old holes wind there way up the dunes at the far end of the course at the turn. I can only imagine that the nearby army rifle range has insisted the closure of these holes at the expense of the golfing experience. Only Hillside golf club in Southport has provided an equally rewarding golf experience for the price. A practice range where you can hit more than a wedge would be good.

FAN BLOODY TASTIC :-) My parents retired to Cardigan, where my mother is originally from and most of my relatives still live. I have been wanting to play Tenby for ages, but never foudn the time on my visits. This time I did, and boy was it worth the wait. Standing on the 1st T you get a great feeling of golfing history and feel honoured to be playing the course. Off the yellow T's the 1st is probably the toughest opening T shot I have seen. All there is in front of you is a marker post and a massive dune !!!!!!!!! Like a previous report stated the first 4-5 holes are really tough, and you wonder how you will be after 18 of them. Luckily the course calms down abit and you an really begin to enjoy playing there. Typical of a great links course, you can hit a good T shot and still have a difficult shot to the green, with the ball below or above ur feet. But we wouldn't want it any other way, because when you hit the green and get that par, or if you are really lucky the birdie it feels so much better than on your standard parkland courses. When you do play you MUST play of the white T on the 4th. It is awesome !!!!. My only downside were a couple of the par 3's were a little on the short side. But the 17th morethan makes up for it. Wonderful hole with wonderous views. It was worth the wait and great fun. The two guys I hooked up with from the 6th onwards moaned all the way round about getting bad bounces etc etc. If you play a links course you can expect nothing less. Play Savour and enjoy:-)

If you are in the area for a few rounds I highly reccommend Cardigan. I play there everytime I am down as my father is a member. I have not played a course with better views and is a links style with some great holes. Maybe not the history of Tenby, but just as enjoyable. FORE :-)

Magnificent. Superb greens and some very tough holes. Fortunately I played in a very light breeze so managed to make a score. Friendly members. Played during festival week.
