Chirk is a superb test of golf and a great society venue. I've played there a couple of times, the following review is based on our last society day out there.
On arrival we were welcomed by a very friendly pro who informed us of the structure for our day - 9 holes, sandwiches, 18 holes & dinner. We then proceeded to play the 9-hole par 3 course, a cracking little setup to test your short game, before heading out to take on the main 18.
The 18 hole course is a great affair - the opener is a difficult par 4 with a stream crossing the fairway approx. 200 yards from the tee. The course then sweeps around the Welsh countryside presenting a variety of holes, each with their own character and challenge.
Holes to look out for;
2nd - A mid length par 4 where the key is accuracy. A well placed drive before the brook leaves a difficult second to a green protected by water to the right.
5th - A short dogleg par 4, a long hitter can go for it if they feel confident. Otherwise a drive or 3 wood to a narrow fairway leaving a pitch in to an uphill green, two tiered.
9th - A hole that even Tiger himself would have nerves on!! A long, long par 5 sloping steadily downhill, doglegging left. The drive must avoid water to the left from the tee, and second shots a brook that crosses the fairway. Third shots must be made to a green sloping quite rapidly toward the fairway. A gem.
11th - Difficult uphill par 4, this hole requires careful placement from the tee, leaving a very tricky uphill second. Anything right is a gonner.
18th - A challenging finishing hole, players must drive over the brook that crosses a few fairways before hitting a mid to short iron into a narrow, well protected green.
On completion of our round we indulged in the best chicken & chips we've ever had!! The clubhouse has a warm, friendly atmosphere, with a terrace area, perfect for a pint after golf in summer. Facilities available include a putting green & nets.
I've no hesitation in recommending Chirk for all golfers, especially societies.

Played Chirk for the first time on the 19/4/2007. Weather was stunning and the course was in fantastic condition. The fairways were superb and the greens were 10/10.
The whole place has a sense of quality usually associated with private clubs, excpept at Chirk you get it for a very reasonable price as I payed just £10 for a evening round. Every shot demands the upmost respect and accuracy as there are plenty of hidden hazards on almost every shot, and only on a few holes are you able to see the pin you are aiming for from the tee. Around and on the green is great fun and a real challenge with lots of bunkers, slopes and hills. The course designers have done a fantastic job making the course difficult and intersting without going too far for us mortals. I really can not wait to go back. Oh and the staff were very helpfull!
The one very minor minor thing that would of helped, especially palying there for the first time would have been a course map on the scorecard due to the many blind shots and hidden hazards.

Went here 2003 with a party of 12 we had a lovely weekend stayed at the hands hotel and played three rounds of golf.
superb course with lovely surroundings and the staff were friendly and the food was lovely.

We played Chirk in May 2003 and everyone agreed that it is a fantastic facility. The 9 hole par 3 course is an excellent way of warming up before tackling the long championship 18 hole course. Both courses were prepared and presented in very good order, just a pity that the weather wasn't perfect aswell which made the very long par 5's into a head wind more like par 7's
The staff are very friendly and welcoming and you certainly get well fed. Five societies on the day were well managed but expect at least four and a half hours for the round.

One of the friendliest clubs you will ever visit. A challenging, long course with well maintained greens. In a difficult catchment area for members as there are many other good courses in the area and this is one of the "newer" ones.Don't waste your time walking as this is one of the cheapest courses around, so hire a golf buggy and you can easily fit in 36 holes in a day....it will still work out cheaper than a day's green fee anywhere else.
spillers (Engalnd) 26/10/01
Very impressive course, visited on a wet weekend but greens were still well maintained. Massive 9th hole is a joy to play. Friendly atmosphere dispalyed by all people associated with the club
Alistair Cook (Engalnd) 06/07/00
Very impressive course with a monster 650 yard hole. Managed to reach the green with three woods.
Fairly good value as well.
