Darland Golf Course Player Reports
Stephen LUCKING (England) 11/08/08
I played here on a midweek afternoon last month and was pleasantly surprised. There is obviously a plan that the bottom of the flag should not be visible from the tee. This is mainly because almost all the holes are dog-legs but the short 8th has a green hidden by trees from the tee.
The greens as with many pay and play courses are not of the highest standard and the whole course seems likely to become very wet after
even a moderate amount of rain.
The course is quite tricky and to make a good score on a first visit would be difficult.
The pace of play was slow though that was more as a result of the standard of the golfers than the pointless aping of the professional tour that afflicts some courses.
The facilities are basic but for the green fee one could not expect too much. In my opinion the most important factor on choosing a course to play should be the quality of the course and value for money and on those 2 elements this course does well.

A young course with some interesting holes, and set in lovely welsh border countryside. The greens seem well looked after, with good fairways. Would love to see it in 50 years when some of the new trees have matured. No facilities to speak of, only a pair of smal practice driving nets. Good value for money. With an "early bird" discount scheme. Friendly bloke in the porta-cabin, even let me use his phone :)

An excellent course for the beginner/novice golfer, offering a challenge on each hole..
The first hole is par 5 and 510 yards. This hole has a double dogleg, teeing off with a pond along the right hand side. Your second shot round the dogleg to the right, over a ditch to avoid a pond before the second dogleg to the left. Your third shot is a short chip onto the green.
The second hole has a forgiving fairway with a 90 degree dogleg to the left before a lob onto the green.
Through the forest to the third tee (make sure you don’t stray onto the 9th or 8th). A 250 yard drive, avoiding the large oak tree before your second shot round the 90 degree dogleg to the right.
The fourth is a straight forward par 4 with a hint of a dogleg to the right.
The fifth, again with a severe dogleg to the left … I’m always getting caught in the rough on this hole!!!
The sixth is a nice par 3 requiring a shot over a pond with the green protected by two bunkers to the front … beware of the bunker behind the green.
The seventh has a small dogleg to the left with heavy rough to the right hand side from the tee.
The eighth is picture perfect with the green fully enclosed by forest with a ditch running across the front together with an awkwardly positioned tree. My favourite, a good par 3.
The ninth again has a severe dogleg to the left and your second shot has a pond running along the fairway to the green.
On the whole a challenging course for a beginner and enough to keep a keen golfer amused.
A young course with planting/trees yet to fully establish, however I’m looking forward to the proposed front 9 to be developed.
